Legal Structure
A Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England and Wales — built for accountability and long-term impact.
Who we are legally
Lifted Life Charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales under charity number 1199698.
This structure was chosen deliberately. A CIO combines the flexibility of an unincorporated charity with the legal protections of a company — giving us the stability to plan for the long term while remaining accountable to regulators and the public.
What this means in practice
- Legal personality. The charity can enter into contracts, own property and take legal action in its own name — separate from the individuals who run it.
- Limited liability. Trustees are protected from personal liability for the charity’s debts, provided they act properly and in good faith.
- Regulatory oversight. We are regulated by the Charity Commission and must comply with charity law, including filing annual returns and maintaining proper accounts.
- Public accountability. Our annual reports and accounts are publicly available on the Charity Commission website — anyone can see how we use our resources.
How we are governed
The charity is led by a board of trustees who are legally responsible for the organisation’s direction, strategy and financial health. Trustees serve voluntarily and are chosen for their commitment to our mission and their relevant skills and experience.
Our constitution sets out the rules by which we operate — how trustees are appointed, how meetings are conducted, how decisions are made and how conflicts of interest are managed.
Why good governance matters
People trust us with their donations, their stories and sometimes their most vulnerable moments. That trust requires us to be well-organised, financially responsible and legally compliant. Good governance is not bureaucracy — it is the foundation that allows us to serve people reliably for years to come.
“Good governance is the foundation of effective charity work.”
